My husband, Bryan, and I went to The Deck behind Hall’s Gas House for lunch on a cloudy and cool Saturday. We arrived early, but by the time we left, there was not an open table and the bar looked to be doing a brisk business. Eating at this outdoor restaurant beside the river (open while the weather cooperates from about May to October) is exactly what the city needs if the goal is to bring crowds downtown.
The Deck has a full bar menu and daily drink specials; its menu is casual. Our server, Stephanie, was friendly, professional and gave us her recommendations. Bryan had a po’ boy sandwich of lightly pan-fried cod (although you could order it deep fried or blackened) with lettuce and tomato and pit beans on the side. Other side choices include potato tots, slaw and mac and cheese. I went with Stephanie’s burger recommendation—it was seasoned just right and you can pick three items from a list of five cheeses, bacon, grilled onions or mushrooms—all served on an onion roll. The portions are not super-sized, but it was plenty of food.
A nice selection of desserts were also available—from German chocolate cake to key lime pie to Belgian chocolate cheesecake to orange-vanilla crème brulee.
We love eating outside at restaurants in the summer and this is a great option for Fort Wayne diners.
