Mental Health Month

May is Mental Health Month and many organizations will bring awareness, compassion and support to millions of Americans living with mental illness by educating communities about psychological disorders.

For 69 years Mental Health America has led the way in mental health education and also provides a theme each year for Mental Health Month. This year their theme, B4Stage4, shines a bright light on how people can address their mental health early, rather than at “Stage 4” when symptoms are more severe and recovery is a longer process. At a local level, Mental Health America of Allen County also provides, education, hope and assistance. Programs such as Lunch and Learn and a host of other services are aimed at improving the lives of children, adults, families and the community. The National Alliance on Mental Illness or NAMI began in 1979 with a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table. Now NAMI is a leading mental health advocate on a national, state and local level. Like Mental Health America, they are active participants in the Mental Health Month campaign and work hard all year round to fight the stigma of mental illness, provide support, education and advocate for equal care.

In Fort Wayne, NAMI meetings are free and open to the public and held each Tuesday from 7 – 9 p.m. Meetings are held at The Carriage House Clubhouse, 3327 Lake Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46805.
