Giving women a better future through professional attire is just one of the goals of the Women’s Bureau, Inc. (formerly the Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau), which opened its flourishing Dress for Success program in May of 2013.
The boutique, a local affiliate of the international not-for-profit Dress for Success program, offers many ways of helping disadvantaged women look professional when applying for a job, including suiting them from gently-donated professional clothing, workshops, career counseling and assistance with debt management, confidence, hair and beauty tips, and blogging, to list just a few of the benefits offered.
“To date, we have served 375 clients for the suitings,” said Kathleen Alter, CEO of the Women’s Bureau, Inc., “and we have also served 75 clients in the Career Center, which aids with job searches, resumes, cover letters, mock interviews and more.”
That’s not all, said Marty Kocks-Hamrick, DFSFW program director, who lists the shop hours as 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and all others by appointment only. “We are planning our second tent clothing sale for June, but as of now, we do not have a place, so I can’t give you a date,” said Kocks-Hamrick.
“Also, we have dressed some women who do not have clothes, such as the one gal whose husband threw her clothes away. She had a job interview and needed clothes so we took care of her need. There are many local women who need Dress for Success as they are seeking employment and do not have any professional clothes at all,” she said. “Most of the women who came in since January, when I became program director, did NOT have a winter coat. They did when they left the boutique….”
Interested donators can give in seven ways: as a volunteer, monetarily, with clothing, by being a corporate partner, a referral agency, by hosting a donation drive, and/or participating in the workshop series.
