Dennis Emley | Enjoying The Ride

Dennis Emley has not only been married to wife, Donna, for 30+ years, but the Fort Wayne pair have also co-run Emley Design Group since the early ‘90s. It’s a good thing, too, as Dennis admits his biggest inspiration is Donna. “She has the biggest, giving heart,” he says. “She also knows how to have fun. My life with her reminds me of the scene from ‘Indiana Jones’ when Harrison Ford is ready to cut the rope bridge. Short Round says to Kate Capshaw, ‘Hold on lady; we go for a ride!’ In my life, Donna is Indiana Jones; she leads us through one adventure after another and I love the ride!” A recent “ride” was Donna’s cancer diagnosis in 2013. “Like everything in our life, we went through it together, but with her doing the hard part. I did the easy part of caring for her, which I try and love to do even during good times.” Other inspirations include Dennis’ father, who through hard work rose into management at International Harvester without a high school or college diploma (although he eventually received a GED and completed college courses); and his mother, who helped him overcome a childhood speech impediment. Dennis, an avid photographer and gardener (his favorite veggies are “sugar baby” tomatoes and rhubarb to make a rhubarb/lime/peppercorn simple syrup for martinis), says he has no career or life regrets. “My wife always says since I grew up in a family with three women, I learned how to treat all women with respect. Obviously, my sisters have not told Donna the rest of the story of our childhood!”
