When the snow flies and the temperature falls below freezing, we want our homes to be a cozy haven. Our bedrooms are the perfect place to create a warm environment. A comfy duvet, a soft throw, a shaggy rug and a lovely window treatment will visually warm your world.
To create the perfect window treatment for your bedroom, take a critical look at your windows and then ask yourself these questions:
- Do you want your new window treatments to make a bold, decorative statement?
- Would you prefer window treatments that provide a soft backdrop to your room’s furnishings?
- Is it important that your window treatment design hide an unpleasant view or enhance a lovely one?
- What kind of light control is required?
- Do you have more than one window and, if so, are they all the same or are they quite different?
Your bedroom window probably requires some type of privacy covering. It is common for this to be a “hard” treatment such as blinds, roller shades, cellular shades or roman shades. A huge bonus: some of these options provide significant insulating value to your room.
Once you have narrowed down your options for privacy, it is time to consider the style of window treatment that will offer you the look that you want. If your room has no architectural interest, selecting a patterned fabric can create a “Wow” factor. Study the blue room and notice that the bold two-tone fabric on the custom traversing draperies provides sophisticated drama and anchors the bed. The room is further balanced by painting one wall the identical hue of the fabric and showcasing the owner’s art.
Now compare the “before” picture to the “after” picture in the softly muted bedroom. The windows in the “before” photo seem cold and hard. In the “after” photo, the view is enhanced and the nook has become cozy. The fabric is repeated in the window treatments framing the bed and the custom valance tucked beneath the side panels hides a cellular shade.
Of course, I recommend using a professional interior decorator who has experience in all aspects of unique window treatments. From selection, to measuring, to designing and lastly installation, careful thought and consideration – up front – will be key to the success of your overall project.
