Is this the summer you replace your white plastic stackable uncomfortable chairs with something more comfy and attractive? If so, here are a few tips for making the perfect choice.
1. Frame (structure) of your table and chairs
Aluminum, plastic, and PVC materials are rustproof, lightweight, easy care and relatively inexpensive.
Steel and wrought iron are heavy-duty, sturdy, will not blow around, but will rust if not weatherproofed or painted periodically.
Wicker uses natural materials such as rattan and is especially durable when treated with a resin finish.
Wood is sturdy and attractive in outdoor furnishings and can be as comfortable as indoor furniture. Regular treatment with a preservative will improve its beauty and longevity. Be sure to choose weather-resistant woods such as teak, redwood, cypress and cedar.
2. Fabric for your seats and cushions
Look for fabrics that are stain- and mildew-resistant, water repellent and fade resistant. Your cushions should have a polyester filler that is lightweight and springy so it will dry quickly after a rainshower.
Select colors that will add color and beauty to your outdoor room. Take note of the colors in your surroundings such as the color of your home, the deck or patio floor, your flowers and bushes, and perhaps a lake or pool. Then, think bold and bright for dramatic contrast!
3. Space for your outside activities
Measure the perimeter and sketch it out marking the placement of doors and walkways. Take note of the direction of the sun so you can plan for shade. List your activities: Grilling? Lounging? Entertaining? Al fresco dining? Afternoon cocktails? Napping? (Don’t we wish?)
Remember that comfort is king. If your outdoor furniture is uncomfortable, it will go unused.
Now the fun part! Select accessories that complete your outside design: Brightly patterned throw pillows, indoor/outdoor area rug, lighting for nighttime use, flowers in decorative pots, art and statuary.
